Coaching for Performance.
by Sir John Whitmore
I have lost count of the number of times that I have recommended this book to leaders looking to develop their coaching skills.
Many people go wild for famous pop stars and actors. For me, as a Leadership Development geek, I was awe struck to hear Sir John, the creator of the GROW model, speak at a conference about 20 years ago when I was undertaking my first Coaching qualification. Fast forward those 20 years and this book is in its 5th edition and still being used as a reference text on the third coaching qualification I was studying!
Key themes in the book include:
The GROW Model: A structured coaching framework that stands for Goal, Reality, Options, and Will. This model provides a practical approach to setting objectives, assessing the current situation, exploring possibilities, and committing to action.
The importance of self-awareness: Coaching is about helping individuals become more aware of their strengths, weaknesses, and beliefs. This self-awareness is essential for personal and professional growth.
The power of questions: Skilled coaching involves asking powerful questions that stimulate thought, challenge assumptions, and facilitate learning.
Building relationships: A strong coaching relationship is based on trust, respect, and empathy. Coaches must create a safe and supportive environment where clients feel comfortable exploring their thoughts and feelings.
Coaching for Performance is a valuable resource for anyone interested in developing their coaching skills or learning more about the principles of effective leadership development.
