hidden potential.

by ADAM GRANT

Like many busy professionals, I often find that when I sit down to read, it appears that my eyelids are connected to my knees.  My knees bend and then my eyes close.  I therefore find that listening to an audiobook is a great way to keep up to pace with the amount of learning  I love to do.  I love the work of Adam Grant, so listening to Hidden Potential on Audiobook was a must for me!

If you don’t already follow him on social media, then I would highly recommend it.  Short soundbites of genius, perfect!

Adam Grant, has long worked to reframe our understanding of work and success, and his latest book "Hidden Potential," is a compelling exploration of how we can move beyond conventional notions of talent and achievement. In a world obsessed with innate ability, Grant shines a light on the often-overlooked power of character skills, strategic learning, and the right support systems. This isn't just another self-help leadership book; it's a meticulously researched and deeply insightful guide to cultivating growth and unlocking potential in ourselves and others.

Growing up behind a super bright sibling was hard for me and the messages I received as a child around that sibling being ‘the clever one’ have left their mark.

Grant dismantles the myth of the "natural genius," arguing that sustainable success is less about inherent gifts and more about the relentless pursuit of mastery. He introduces us to individuals who have defied expectations, demonstrating that progress isn't a linear ascent but a series of stumbles, recalibrations, and persistent learning. He champions the concept of "character skills," emphasizing the importance of grit, curiosity, and initiative over raw intelligence. These skills, he argues, are malleable and can be developed through deliberate practice and a growth mindset.

This and other learning I have done as a parent have led me down a very different path to the one my parents walked.  The tenacity, focus and development of a growth mindset in my own child is what I am in pursuit of – not the exam grade itself!

One of the book's most compelling aspects is its focus on the "scaffolding" required for growth. Grant emphasises the crucial role of mentors, coaches, and supportive environments in facilitating learning and development. He reveals how access to resources, opportunities, and encouragement can transform individuals who might otherwise be overlooked. This isn't just about individual effort; it's about creating systems that nurture potential in everyone, regardless of their starting point.

I hope I am putting this into practice, both as a coach and as a parent.

Grant's writing is engaging and accessible, blending compelling anecdotes with rigorous research. He seamlessly weaves together stories of athletes, educators, and entrepreneurs, illustrating his points with relatable examples. He avoids jargon and instead uses clear, concise language to explain complex concepts. He also challenges us to rethink our definitions of success. He argues that true achievement isn't about reaching a fixed destination but about continuous learning and growth. Grant encourages us to embrace challenges, learn from failures, and cultivate a lifelong love of learning.

"Hidden Potential" is not just about individual transformation; it's also a call to action for leaders, educators, and parents. Grant urges us to create environments that foster growth, provide opportunities for development, and celebrate effort over innate talent. He challenges us to look beyond traditional metrics of success and recognise the hidden potential in those around us.

The book is structured around three key areas:

  • Character Skills: Grant delves into the importance of grit, curiosity, and initiative, providing practical strategies for developing these essential qualities.

  • Structural Scaffolding: He explores the role of mentors, coaches, and supportive environments in facilitating growth and development.

  • Systemic Strategies: Grant examines how to create systems that nurture potential in everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances.

In a world that often celebrates instant success and innate talent, "Hidden Potential" offers a refreshing and empowering perspective. It reminds us that potential is not a fixed trait but a dynamic process that can be cultivated through deliberate effort, strategic learning, and the right support systems.

This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to unlock their own hidden potential and create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. It’s a book that not only inspires, but provides a practical roadmap for real, lasting change.

It is a book that left me with a practical guide to creating a better version of myself and those around me.
